man with questions about chiropractic treatment

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a drug-free, hands-on, highly skilled approach that can rapidly treat the source of your pain. Accidents, stress, overuse or poor posture can injure your spine and the other joints throughout your body, causing pain in the surrounding muscles, joints, and nerves.

A Chiropractic adjustment is the application of a specific force through a restricted joint. The adjustment restores normal joint movement, reduces muscle tension and allows your nervous system to function properly again. The results are a decrease in pain, increased mobility and flexibility, restored function and a renewed sense of vitality.

Chiropractic treatment works because it treats the cause of your back and joint pain, not just the symptoms.

How does Chiropractic Work?

Your spine and surrounding skeleton has a very important function in your body: to support your body weight and allow movement. Your spine also protects your spinal cord, which is the “central highway” of your nervous system. Our ability to move, function, fight off infection and heal requires a healthy spine and nervous system.

The bones in your body are connected by ligaments, muscles, and cartilage which work together in very specific ways. When everything is working and moving well, you are aligned, strong, and flexible. The stress of daily living, injuries, overuse or accidents can cause the bones to shift out of their proper alignment, which alters normal movement patterns, and affects their range of motion. These small changes can cause pain and/or dysfunction by putting pressure on the different joints, muscles, and nerves in your body.

Chiropractors understand how to relieve this pain and return proper function. They are specially trained to find the source of your problem, make the proper adjustments, and provide advice that will allow your joints to work properly once again.

What should I expect on the first visit?

The initial visit takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. During this time Dr Najm will provide you with a thorough consultation by taking a full detailed history encompassing what it is that has brought you in to the office and what is going on with your health and well-being in general. This will be followed by a physical exam using hands-on orthopedic tests, neurological tests and range of motion measurements.

Once the problem is identified, Dr Najm will discuss your diagnosis, whether or not chiropractic treatment will benefit you, and if so, a proposed treatment plan.

What does a sore back mean?

Back pain may be the result of many different things. It can be caused by irritated joints in the spine, postural imbalances, stiff and tight or overworked muscles, and/or irritated nerves. Most people suffering from back pain have a combination of the above issues.

What can a chiropractor do about knee trouble?

Chiropractors are trained to look at all joints in the body, including the knees. Through a detailed history of the problem and hands on orthopedic testing, they can make a diagnosis of the underlying cause of the knee trouble. Then they can recommend imaging if necessary. A chiropractor will help align the knee joints using adjustments and soft tissue therapy. They will also prescribe you an exercise and stretching regime to help in your rehabilitation.

What are shin splints?

Shin splints, also known as medial tibial stress syndrome, are the result of improper foot mechanics leading to excessive stress and strain on the muscles in the leg and/or tight leg muscles working inadequately. These things may result in too much strain being placed on the areas where these muscles attach to the shin bone or tibia. This condition is most commonly seen in runners. The pain is often felt along the shin at the start of the run, but lessens once the muscles are warm. The pain then returns and is often more severe once the activity has stopped.

How can a chiropractor help with shin splints?

Chiropractors will work to diagnose the cause of the shin splints and then work with you to help correct the problem. This can be done through adjustments of the joints to ensure proper alignment, soft tissue therapy for the affected muscles, and a foot and gait analysis to determine if you would benefit from orthotics.

How can the whole family benefit from chiropractic?

As Chiropractors, our primary focus is on the spine. Your nervous system is housed within the spine. Your nervous system is the master controller of the body, it controls everything your body does; how you sense pain, how you heal, how you fight off infections, how you digest food and much more. A properly aligned spine removes pressure, tension and torsion from the nervous system, allowing it to function optimally. A healthy nervous system means a healthier you and your children.  See also Chiropractic and Children, and Chiropractic and Seniors.

How do chiropractic and massage work together?

Chiropractic care focuses on aligning the joints in the body. When joints are out of alignment it can cause the surrounding muscles to tighten up. Re-aligning the joints will help to decrease the stress and strain on the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the body. Massage works to increase circulation, lymphatic drainage, decrease muscle tension and stress in the body. All of these things help the body hold chiropractic adjustments longer.

What are orthotics?

Walking on unnatural hard surfaces like the sidewalks of Toronto and hard floors consequently alters our foot’s natural shape and compromises our natural arches. Prescription orthotics are precisely designed to re-establish and re-create our natural foot function and balance. Your orthotics should be custom-made to match the unique needs of your feet and joints. The more support your feet have, the fewer aches and pains you will feel.

What conditions do orthotics help with?

The feet are the body’s natural foundation. If there is a problem in the feet, it can affect the body the whole way up. Problems in the feet may lead to issues in the knees, hips and/or back. Conditions such as plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, Achilles tendonitis, iliotibial band syndrome, runner’s knee, sacroiliac joint dysfunction or back pain may all result from the misalignment of joints in the feet.

How are Dr Najm’s orthotics better than others?

Our chiropractor at Forces of Nature Wellness Clinic in Toronto, Dr Najm, has taken numerous continuing education courses and seminars detailing foot biomechanics and gait analysis. A detailed history is taken; a biomechanical exam is performed as well as an analysis of the individual’s gait. A cast is then made of the person’s foot. The findings from the history and biomechanical exam are used in combination with the cast to fabricate a custom-made orthotic.

What are the Warning Signs of Back Trouble?

Your spine protects your spinal cord, which is the “central highway” of your nervous system. Our ability to move, function, fight off infection, sense pain and heal requires a healthy spine and nervous system. 90% of our nervous system deals with controlling the functions of our body, only 10% deals with pain and sensation. Therefore, unless that 10% is being affected, you may not even realize that you had a problem. These are the cases where you hear of people who lift and move heavy things all day and are pain free, but then one morning they go to put a sock on and BOOM their back goes out. In these cases, the person had an underlying problem, however, it just wasn’t affecting the part of the nervous system that senses pain.
If you do affect the part of the nervous system which senses pain, you may feel stiffness and tightness, a dull ache, twinges, or a sharp shooting pain. While pain may not always be present, when it is, it is a key indicator that there is an underlying issue that should be addressed.

What impact does misalignment of the spine have on the rest of the body?

The bones in your body are connected by ligaments, muscles, and cartilage which work together in very specific ways. When everything is working and moving well, you are aligned, strong, and flexible. The stress of daily living, overuse, injuries or accidents can cause the bones to shift out of their proper alignment, which alters normal movement patterns, and affects their range of motion. These small changes can cause pain, decreased performance and/or dysfunction by putting unnatural pressure on the different joints, muscles, and nerves in your body.

What does back pain mean?

There are many different reasons for people to be suffering from back pain. Pain is not normal; if you are experiencing pain it means that there is something wrong. Back pain can result from problems with the muscles, joints, discs, nerves or even the organs. If you are experiencing back pain, it is important to have it checked to discover the source of the problem. Chiropractors look for the source and work to fix the problem. Chiropractors also work with you to help decrease the incidence of recurrences.

What does neck pain mean?

Stress and tension is often the primary culprit for pain in the neck region. Having mis-aligned joints can increase the tension in the surrounding muscles. Problems with the joints and muscles can cause pain and/or headaches. Chiropractic adjustments work to re-align the joints, decrease the tension in the muscles and free up your nervous system to communicate with the body, telling the body how to heal itself. If you are experiencing pain or tension, you should have yourself examined by a chiropractor to discover the source of the problem.

What does knee pain mean?

Knee pain may be the result of many different underlying issues. Traumatic events may result in tears to the ligaments or meniscus. Wear and tear in the joints may lead to osteoarthritis. Tight muscles may pull the knee joint out of proper alignment. Problems with the alignment of the joints in the feet can result in alignment issues in the knees causing extra stress through the knee joint. If you are suffering from knee pain, it is important to have the knee joint, plus the joints above and below examined for the cause of the discomfort.

What causes headaches and migraines?

Headaches and migraines may be the result of many different things. Headaches are often the result of stress or tension, they may be stemming from a sinus infection or they can also be the result of low blood sugar levels. Migraines are often the result of particular triggers. These triggers vary from person to person; however, common triggers are alcohol, dairy and chocolate.  Muscle tension through the head and neck can trigger headaches or migraines.  Proper neck alignment can help alleviate both headaches and migraines.

How can chiropractic help performance?

Chiropractic works to help align all the joints in the body. When joints are aligned, there is a decrease in irritation, a decrease in protective muscle spasm, an increase in range of motion and a removal of interference within the nervous system. Your nervous system is the connection between the brain and almost every cell in the body. Your nervous system controls everything that the body does. Therefore, in a day and age when a fraction of a second can mean the difference between winning and only placing, you want the communication between brain and body to be free of interference. Chiropractic care works to achieve this. Many high end athletes work closely with their chiropractors to ensure that they will be at their best for competitions including the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Argonauts.
