Chiropractic Care and Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that begins in the lower back, runs through the buttocks and down the leg. Sciatica is the result of irritation or compression of this nerve in the low back. It often starts with pain in the low back that can then travel down one or both legs. Irritation and or compression of the nerves in the low back may be the result of a disc herniation or bulge compressing the nerves or it may be due to inflammation or degeneration of the joint that the nerve passes next to, or tension in the muscles that the nerves pass through, over or under.

Chiropractic care has been found to be a safe and effective form of management for sciatica. Chiropractic adjustments work to restore normal healthy motion of the joints in the spine, helping to reduce nerve compression, irritation and the associated pain.

Pain medications for sciatica would be similar to those listed on our page for Low Back Pain: NSAIDs, Opioids, Acetaminophen, all of which come with varying degrees of side effects.

Natural Treatments for Sciatica

Acupuncture

Acupuncture helps relieve sciatica pain. It is recommended in conjunction with chiropractic as a safe, natural pain reliever while chiropractic is restoring normal healthy motion of the spine.  A series of acupuncture treatments is usually recommended for longer lasting relief and Chinese herbs may be used to strengthen the back.

Registered Massage Therapy

RMT’s are trained to help relax the muscles that may be causing nerve compression or misalignment of the spine.  It is also recommended to do massage therapy for sciatica along with treatment by your chiropractor.

Herbal Medicine

Naturopathic doctors can prescribe natural anti-inflammatories like curcumin and boswellia can help relieve pain and inflammation without damaging the stomach lining, minerals like magnesium orally and topically to relax muscles, and perform acupuncture to relieve sciatic pain.
